it’s that phrase again

The phrase, conspiracy theorists. The full, cliché phrase is, wild-eyed conspiracy theorists. This phrase contains an implicit appeal to the listener or reader to visualise a wild-eyed conspiracy theorist, which requires first to visualise a wild-eyed person, and second to label that person as a conspiracy theorist, thus in fact doing all the arguer’s work for him.

tarpley’s reaction to ‘barky’ win

Webster G. Tarpley, Washington DC, Nov 8 2008

Obama’s first appointments have confirmed the grimmest suspicions about the new regime. The naming of the thuggish Rahm Emanuel as the new Martin Bormann of the regime has caused much consternation, even among the netroots or nutroots crowd over at the Daily Kos. Rahm is a former member of the Israeli Defense Force, whose ruling passion is that he is a warmonger. In 2006, when Rahm ran the Democratic congressional money machine, he made sure that only warmongers committed to the open-ended prosecution of the Afghan and Iraq wars could get any Democratic Party financing for their races. Many contests were lost as a result. A tragic case was that of grass-roots antiwar activist Christine Cegelis of Ohio, who was defeated in the Democratic primary by Tammy Duckworth, an Iraq war veteran who advocated endless hostilities there. Duckworth lost to the Republican by several points. If the $300k Rahm gave Duckworth had been shared with anti-war candidate Bob Bowen in Florida, a Democratic seat could easily have been added. Rahm is also a product of the corrupt Illinois bipartisan combine, which I have described in my books.

A co-chair of the transition team is Valerie Jarrett, who served as Barky’s travelling schoolmarm during the campaign. Jarrett comes from the Daley wing of the Illinois combine. She has provided graft and related support for Michelle Obama’s foundation-funded operations. Jarrett is also an integral part of the Chicago housing graft community, and is discussed in detail in my Obama biography. She is joined on the transition team by John Podesta, a Clinton-era retread who worked for Sen. Tom Daschle, the senator from Citibank, the biggest employer in South Dakota. Podesta also worked for Sen. Patrick Leahy of Vermont. Another Daschle-Citibank retread is transition co-chair Tom Rouse, who was the chief of staff for Daschle when he was the weakest Democratic majority leader in recent memory, surrendering to Bush on point after point. Chief strategist remains David Axelrod, of the corrupt Illinois combine, who was taught his mindbending skills in the infamous “1313” Rockefeller-funded think tank at the University of Chicago.

Obama’s transitional council of economic advisers is also notable. The dominant figures here are all Wall Street derivatives merchants and their quackademic apologists and politician clients. The key people here are plutocrat Warren Buffet, Obama moneybags and Hyatt heiress Penny Pritzker, Goldman Sachs-Citibank alum Robert Rubin, failed Harvard president Larry Summers, Google spook Eric Schmidt, and Roger Ferguson, the former vice president of the Federal Reserve board. The most obscene is Trilateral Commission bigwig Paul Adolf Volcker, the bringer of the 22% prime rate of 1981 and the destroyer of the US industrial base. What is truly notable about this list is that there is not one single labor leader. No Sweeney of the AFL-CIO, no Hoffa of the Teamsters, no UAW, not even Andy Stern of the SIEU. Note the difference to the New Deal, when labor reps were indispensable. With Barky, only derivatives monsters need apply. Also notable by their absence are leaders of women’s groups, small business associations, the congressional black caucus, retirees’ groups like the AARP — there is not even a token face representing any of these groups, all of which have a vital interest in economic policy. Read the ill omens, if you have eyes to see. The Obama regime is shaping up as of the bankers, by the bankers, for the bankers. This is not the FDR New Deal — this is the Mussolini fascist corporate state.

We are also told that Barky has been on the phone to foreign leaders about matters of economics. Let us read the tea leaves: whom did Barky call? Here is the list: Australia, Britain, Canada, France, Germany, Israel, Japan, Mexico, and South Korea. Notice now who is NOT on the list. Start with the great world powers who have been snubbed: Russia and China, both of whom are bigger holders of US Treasury bonds than most of those who are on the list. Saudi Arabia, who might have needed reassurance that Barky is not a commie, are also snubbed. Forget ideology, and behold the ineptitude. Most glaring of all is the lack of any phone call to a leading third world or developing sector country, other than Mexico, which is a branch of NAFTA. No calls were made to Brazil, Argentina, South Africa, Nigeria, Algeria, India or a long list of other leading states. Nobody in Africa, nobody in south Asia, and nobody in South America got a call. Not even those who will be coming to the pseudo-Bretton Woods conference set for Washington later this month. The best we can hope for regarding that conference is that it end in a stalemate, dividing the world between a US-UK dominated derivatives bloc and a BRIC-SA anti-derivatives bloc interested in real physical commodity production, not fictitious capital. Obama, in summation, is acting just like the abject puppet of the Wall Street derivatives merchants and warmongers which we have argued him to be.

You’re A Holocaust
Spencer Ackerman, Firedoglake, Nov 7 2008

Oh good, for a moment I thought the Second Holocaust was off. In response to this plan put forward from Obama —

The Obama Administration will call on Americans to serve in order to meet the nation’s challenges. President-Elect Obama will expand national service programs like AmeriCorps and Peace Corps and will create a new Classroom Corps to help teachers in underserved schools, as well as a new Health Corps, Clean Energy Corps, and Veterans Corps.

— John Derbyshire comments at the Corner:

Arbeit Macht Frei (cont.) [John Derbyshire]

Sorry, you had no idea what I was posting about, did you? This.

And I’m with that, you know? It’s a thin line between Veteran Corps and Freikorps. The Health Corps will cleanse the virus of Jewry from the body politic. It’s Jonah Goldberg’s nightmare come to pass.

US Imposes Banking Sanctions on Iran
VOA, Nov 6 2008

The US Treasury has moved to further restrict Iran’s access to the US financial system, by banning certain money transfers. The Treasury Department announced on Thursday that it will revoke Iran’s so-called “U-Turn” license, which currently allows transfers to briefly enter the US before being sent to offshore banks. Until Thursday, US banks were allowed to process certain money transfers for Iranian banks and other Iranian customers as long as the payments were initiated by and ended up in offshore non-US and non-Iranian banks.

Situation Vacant: Debt Collector. The successful applicant must have demonstrated ability to destroy US (space) satellites.
Of course, this is a default — a sterilizing manoeuvre. And this default by the banks is not restricted to Iran: when a 30% cut is demanded before rapidly deflating $US parked in the US can be moved to a foreign bank, there is effectively default for at least some other countries as well. Note also that default puts the “strength” of the $US in context. Transactionally the fools (bankers and customers alike) are telling themselves that the system still works, even though metaphorically speaking it has lost almost virtually all compression, and the scam-artists have given Kapital’s engine its last dose of Bar’s, stuffed the differential full of banana skins, and to be safe read it the last rites in both Hebrew and Latin.

Shock as top Indian Army officer arrested over bomb attack
Jeremy Page, Times, Nov 8 2008

The Indian Army has been shocked by the arrest of a senior Military Intelligence officer on suspicion of involvement in a bomb attack by Hindu extremists in western India in September. Colonel Srikant Prasad Purohit is the first serving officer in India’s Army to be arrested on terrorism charges. His detention is prompting calls for a ban on Hindu nationalist groups accused of stirring political violence, including recent attacks on Christians in eastern India, before national elections next year. It may also force Indian authorities to investigate whether Hindu radicals were behind other recent bomb attacks, many of which have been blamed on Islamic extremists backed by Pakistan’s intelligence service.

Colonel Purohit, 37, was arrested in Bombay on Wednesday on suspicion of involvement in a bomb attack that killed at least six people near a mosque in the western city of Malegaon on Sep 29. The Anti-Terror Squad (ATS) of the surrounding state of Maharashtra is now questioning him at its headquarters in Bombay, according to Dinesh Agarwal, an ATS spokesman. Inspector Agarwal denied Indian media reports that Colonel Purohit had confessed to masterminding the explosions, and that the ATS wanted to question other serving military officers. “The investigation is progressing,” he told the Times. “Questioning other serving officers is not on the cards now.” However, he confirmed that the ATS had arrested eight other civilians, including a retired army major, Ramesh Upadhyay, on suspicion of involvement.

Investigators say that Colonel Purohit and Major Upadhyay were both members of Abhinav Bharat (New India), a Hindu nationalist organisation founded in the western city of Pune in June 2006. Abhinav Bharat’s President is Himani Savarkar, the niece of the Hindu radical who assassinated Mahatma Gandhi, the Indian independence leader, in 1948. She accuses India’s ruling coalition — led by the Congress Party — of trying to smear Hindu nationalists and has offered legal aid to all the arrested members of Abhinav Bharat. She admits meeting Colonel Purohit, but says that he could not have been a member of Abhinav Bharat because army officers are forbidden from joining political organisations. “It’s a political conspiracy, led by the Congress,” she told the Times.

Her group is regarded as one of the more radical in the Hindu nationalist movement, which also includes the Bharatiya Janata Party, India’s main opposition party. The BJP, anxious not to undermine its own anti-terror platform, initially distanced itself from Colonel Purohit and the other Malegaon suspects. But in the past two days, it has defended and offered legal support to Sadhvi Pragya Thakur, a Hindu holy woman who is also among those arrested. “Whoever is connected with cultural nationalism and Bharatiyata [Indian-ness] cannot be a terrorist,” said Rajnath Singh, the BJP chief, who has been photographed with the Sadhvi (the female equivalent of a Sadhu, or Hindu monk). “Without sufficient evidence there is no reason to term Pragya Thakur a terrorist,” he said.

Secular parties point to this as further evidence justifying a ban on Hindu nationalist groups they say were behind violence that killed at least 60 Christians in the eastern state of Orissa this year. The Government has so far shied away from a ban, fearing that it would provoke a backlash from other radicals and rally support for the BJP ahead of national elections, due by May. The concern now is that Colonel Purohit’s arrest will damage the reputation of the Army, which is generally seen as apolitical and is often deployed to quell communal violence. “This incident is a matter of serious concern for all of us. We are very determined to go to the root of the whole thing,” said A.K. Antony, the Defence Minister. “We are waiting for a report from the Maharashtra police and I can tell you, we are taking it seriously.”

Lieutenant General S. P. S. Dhillon, the Deputy Army Chief, said: “The Indian Army’s prestige has been hurt after our officer’s name came up in the Malegaon blast case.” He called Colonel Purohit’s case “a freak incident”. However, military and terrorism experts said they expected that he was probably just one of several Hindu extremists within the ranks of the Army, which will now have to overhaul its internal monitoring systems. “There’s been a process of political radicalisation going on for some time,” said Dr Ajay Sahni, executive director of the Institute for Conflict Management. “At some level a handful of people in the army will have become infected. As far as the institution of the army is concerned there is no danger of radicalisation — army traditions are far too strong. But there will be the odd bad egg.”

New Army Recruiting Tactic: Obama will “Get Us Out of Iraq”
Brandon Friedman, Vet Voice, Nov 07 2008

Well that didn’t take long. Polls across America had been closed for less than 24 hours and Army Career Counselors were already exploiting Barack Obama’s victory in an effort to recruit former soldiers back into units. This email was forwarded to me by an Iraq veteran and former Army captain who received it on Wednesday:

For those who are unfamiliar, this means that if you’re a former soldier who’s still subject to being recalled to active duty (IRR), you can join a Reserve or National Guard unit on a contract that guarantees you won’t go anywhere for at least two years. That’s all well and good. But in this email, the career counselor seriously raises some eyebrows in suggesting that by the end of the two years, Obama “will have gotten us out of these other countries.” So has this career counselor simply gone “rogue” on us? Or is this going to be the new method by which the Army attracts soldiers into — and back into — the ranks? Leaving aside for a moment the fact that the recruiter is making a promise he knows he can’t keep, I’ll be honest: I’d be lying if I said the prospect of an Obama administration hadn’t made me consider the possibility of rejoining. So, in essence, this career counselor has probably just taken a logical, reasonable step. But larger questions become immediately apparent: Was this career counselor told to use this tactic by his chain of command or not? Is this going to be a shift in recruiting Army-wide? Is the Army going to use President Obama as a recruiting tool? If so, this would symbolize a stunning — but totally rational — renunciation of the Bush administration and its handling of the military. If this becomes an Army policy, it represents a true “ding, dong, the witch is dead” moment for the service. We’ll be watching this closely to see if other, higher-ranking officers make similar statements. Because it’s a fact that many of them have been eagerly awaiting this moment to begin the rebuilding process.

advice for DEBKAfile: don’t kid a kidder

Syria’s Assad cooks Mossad-Saudi-al Qaeda plot
to discredit pro-Western Lebanese government

DEBKAfile, Nov 7 2008

Syrian president Bashar Assad has drawn encouragement to go ahead with a drive to recover his grip on Lebanon from signals coming in from Barack Obama’s team and from the peace overtures of Israeli transitional prime minister Ehud Olmert, DEBKAfile’s Beirut sources report. To this end, the Syrian president has concocted an improbable disinformation cocktail which brings together the al Qaeda-linked Fatah al-Islam terrorist organization, Saudi intelligence and the Israeli Mossad. This mix is designed to be explosive enough to discredit the Lebanese majority leader Saad Hariri and oust the pro-western government which stands in the way of Syria’s domination of Beirut. Thursday night, Nov 6, Syrian state TV paraded four Fatah al-Islam terrorists who are charged with bombing Syrian security installations on the Damascus airport road on Sep 27 at the cost of 17 lives. Shown with them were documents “proving” that a Saudi businessman had bankrolled the attack as the manager of this al Qaeda-linked organization’s bank account. Wafaa el-Abassi, daughter of the Fatah al-Islam leader, appeared next to “reveal” that she had heard her father say he had received moneys from Saad Hariri’s Mustaqbal Movement in Beirut. Syria has taken to using Fatah al-Islam as a multitask tool for its propaganda needs, including the pretext for its military concentrations around Lebanon’s borders.

When he met US secretary of state Condoleezza Rice in New York last month, Syrian foreign minister Walid Muallem explained that Syria was forced to encircle Lebanon after Fatah al-Islam seized control of the northern Lebanese Tripoli region on orders from al Qaeda. DEBKAfile’s sources report that with two ingredients of Damascus’ disinformation cocktail in place, Damascus is ready to go with the third. The alleged Lebanese Mossad spy, whose detention was first revealed on Nov 1, is about to be identified as Ali Jarrah, who was employed jointly by the Israeli Mossad and the Lebanese Saad Hariri. Damascus earlier implicated the spy in the murder of Hizballah’s military chief Imad Mughniyeh in Damascus last February. This “revelation” is meant to close the disinformation noose around Hariri’s neck and undermine the reputation of anti-Syrian government leaders in Beirut as the sheet anchor of stable government in Lebanon. Assad is presenting them instead as the hub of a roaring trade in operational plans, intelligence and funds among terror groups linked to al Qaeda, Saudi intelligence and the Israeli Mossad. Israeli intelligence sources are highly critical of Olmert’s willingness to put up with Assad’s defamations of Israeli intelligence without protest for the sake of his prospective dialogue with Syria. Foreign minister Tzipi Livni and defense minister Ehud Barak are equally faulted for their failure to fight back.
