Source: Cyprus detains Iran arms ship en route to Syria
Barak Ravid, Haaretz, Jan 29 2009

Cypriot authorities detained an Iranian arms ship on Thursday en route to Syria, a European diplomatic source said. This move is apparently the result of requests by Israel and the US that Cyprus stop the ship. It is carrying a large amount of weaponry, including artillery rounds and rockets that Israel believes are destined for either Hezbollah or Hamas. The vessel left the Persian Gulf a few weeks ago, and reached about 60 miles from Cyprus’ port city of Limassol on Wednesday. The Cypriot authorities were the only ones authorized to confiscate the ship’s cargo, since it was flying the Cypriot flag. According to the diplomat, Cypriot customs officials contacted the Iranian boat and demanded that it sail to Limassol for a check. The US Navy had earlier detained the ship in the Red Sea, but was forced to release it on Tuesday, when it became apparent that there was no legal basis for holding it. At a press conference in Washington, Admiral Mike Mullen, who heads the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said that, although US Navy personnel had boarded the ship and found the weapons, they had no legal authority to impound the arms. Mullen suggested that more stringent resolutions by the UN Security Council would be required in order to do so, stating clearly that Iran is violating standards against arms smuggling. He also said he believes the ship is heading for Syria.

    Hi
I am Esfandiar Khodaee from Iran
Israel is frightened with every shadow. This is the end of fear to block the way of medicines to the wound on the fear of weapons.
the Iranian ship is just humanitarian aids. They could inspect it.
I am sorry for that and I am sure that Israel cant continue this way.

Hello, Esfandiar. This isn’t that humanitarian aid ship, which has in the last day or two been seized by Egypt, this is a slightly older story I have been following for a week or so. This ship is carrying a — perfectly legal — consignment of arms to Syria.

By the way, since Russia finally started to supply the S300 (TOR-1) air defense system to Syria — and this isn’t the real state-of-the-art, S400 (Triumf) — the ZUKUSA (my word for the Zion/UK/USA axis) have become more determined than ever to frame Syria for something or other, like they tried to do with Rafiq Hariri’s death.

May I recommend a really enjoyable discussion (or polemic) site called
    http://www.iraq-war.ru/ ?
These people are a marvellous bunch ( except for what we call ‘trolls’, which are zionist hasbara kids who keep turning up everywhere). A real free-wheeling Internet discussion board with all the relevant stories right there to comment on, and an assortment of typical Internet politicos — it’s fun.

(my word for the Zion/UK/USA axis)

I think Germany and France are increasingly being included (or re-included) in this axis. To be honest I think the only point of departure between them was their attitude towards Saddam Hussein. I’d definately expect to hear more about the NATO option in regards to Palestine.

Daniel, I think a lot about NATO, but thanks to the Dugin influence, I suppose, I also try to think geopolitically, and from that point of view it remains as true as ever that the only axis that can rule the Eurasian World Island, in purely logistical terms, is Berlin-Moscow.

I wasn’t trying to imply that NATO itself was powerful. I just meant that I see imperialism becoming more euro-american under Obama.

But Germany’s natural geopolitical advantage lies in an alliance — an ‘axis’, which is a perfectly legitimate and value-neutral geopolitical term — with Russia, not with UKUSA. Oddly enough, A Russo/German/Israel triangle would have the greatest natural geopolitical advantage of all. Here I suspect I am reading Dugin again.
