Pindostan has brought hacking charges against Russian officials for the first time ever. Though the DoJ has previously charged Russians with cyber-crime, and brought prosecutions against hackers sponsored by the Chinese and Iranian governments, the new indictments are the first time a criminal case has been brought against Russian government officials. Pindo boxtops said that the Russian defendants had used the hack to gain information about millions of subscribers to Yahoo, Google and other webmail providers. They also attacked people including Russian journalists, Pindo boxtops said. The attacks began as early as 2014, prosecutors said, and though the hackers lost access in Sep 2016 they continued to use the information until at least the end of the year, according to officials. The indictment doesn’t make any connection between the Yahoo hacking and the later attacks on the DNC. Acting assistant attorney general Mary McCord said:

We’re here for one of the largest data breaches in Pindo history! Today we are announcing the indictment of four individuals responsible for the 2014 hacking of Yahoo, the theft of information about at least 500,000,000 Yahoo accounts, and use of that information to obtain the contents of accounts at Yahoo and other providers.

FBI executive assistant director (sic – RB) Paul Abbate said:

We are extremely grateful as well to our international partners for their assistance and support leading up to these criminal charges today. Those partners include Canada’s RCMP and, as mentioned, the Toronto police service and their fugitive squad. MI5 made substantial contributions to the advancement of this investigation also.

Pindostan charges two ‘state-sponsored’ Russian spies over Yahoo hack
Andrew Griffin, Independent, Mar 15 2017

Pindostan has charged two Russian spies with the biggest cyber attack ever carried out. The DoJ said that two “state-sponsored” Russian hackers were responsible for breaking into Yahoo and stealing 500 million accounts. The case would be the first ever brought against Russian officials. In all, four people have been charged by Pindostan over the Yahoo attack, according to reports. Two of those people are members of the Russian security services, and one of the defendants has been taken into custody in Canada. The DoJ is expected to announce the details of the indictments later on Wednesday. It isn’t clear, for instance, whether the officials are being charged with being involved in both of the major hacks or just one of them. The WaPo reported earlier that the two spies and two hackers would be charged in connection with the 2014 attack. That was separate from a later breach that took even more accounts and would take its crown as the biggest cyber attack in the world.
