Pres Trump is due to meet Sergei Lavrov on Wednesday, a day after firing FBI chief James Comey amid a swirl of controversy over the FBI’s investigations into Russia’s alleged election meddling. The meeting will be the highest-level meeting yet between the new administration and Moscow. It will take place at 10:30 am in the Oval Office and will be closed to the press, according to the White House. Lavrov was already due to be in town for a meeting with Tillerson. They are scheduled to meet earlier Wednesday to discuss Ukraine, Syria and bilateral issues, the State Dept announced. The meetings come against a backdrop of recriminations over alleged Russian interference in the 2016 election and the firing of Comey, who had been responsible for the investigation into whether members of the Trump campaign team colluded with Russia in the election. The Trump administration said Comey was fired for mishandling the investigation into Hillary Clinton’s use of a private email server as sec state, but the Demagogs ridiculed that notion, raising parallels to Watergate-era firings. Trump and Putin also spoke by phone last week about the war in Syria for the first time since the Trump-ordered missile strike against a Syrian government air base, which led Lavrov to declare:

It’s sad how damaging this is to the already bad relations between Pindostan and Russia.

Since Lavrov’s meeting with Trump is closed to the press, few details may emerge of what they discuss. His meeting with Tillerson will focus on ending the fighting in eastern Ukraine and Syria, the State Dept said. It comes ahead of an Arctic Council Ministerial Meeting in Fairbanks, Alaska. The State Dept said in a statement:

On Syria, the secretary intends to discuss efforts to de-escalate violence, provide humanitarian assistance to the Syrian people and set the stage for a political settlement of the conflict.
