Trump, Putin To Hold First Meeting On Friday

Pres Trump will hold his first “full fledged” meeting with Presi Putin on Friday Jul 7 on the sidelines of the G20 summit in Hamburg, the Kremlin announced on Tuesday. Yuri Ushakov, Putin’s foreign policy advisor, said:

A date has been agreed, the seventh of July.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitri Peskov specified it will not merely be a brief contact on the sidelines. The meeting had been hinted at previously, although until today the Kremlin had said that neither the timing nor an agenda had been agreed, according to the FT, reflecting Moscow’s uncertainty what to expect. Russian foreign policy officials said on Monday that the two presidents plan to discuss Syria, Ukraine and terrorism. Russia also sees the need to discuss bilateral issues, disarmament, dispute over Russian diplomatic property seized by Pindostan in December in Maryland and near New York. While North Korea is not scheduled to be a topic, that may change after the overnight launch of the country’s first ICBM. According to Citi’s FX desk:

This adds to headline risk on Friday, and makes for an exciting ride. Other bilateral meetings will be taking place as the G20 Summit begins. But for USD, we also have the Jul 2017 Monetary Policy Report release in advance of Yellen’s Humphrey Hawkins testimony and of course, its payrolls.

And while we doubt anything substantial will be decided during the meeting, many are already looking to the day’s main event: what will the handshake between the two world leaders look like:
