Russia will provide assistance to Armenia if the war encroaches on its territory
Colonel Cassad, Oct 31 2020

The Russian Foreign Ministry clarified the position of the Russian Federation on participation in the war in Karabakh. It said:

In connection with the appeal of (Pashinyan) to (Putin) with a request to start consultations in order to determine the type and amount of assistance that the Russian Federation can provide to the Republic of Armenia to ensure its security, we reaffirm the commitment of the Russian Federation to its allied obligations in relation to the Republic of Armenia, including those arising from the Treaty of Friendship, Cooperation and Mutual Assistance between the Russian Federation and the Republic of Armenia dated Aug 29 1997. A number of articles of this Treaty presuppose specific actions in the event of a threat of armed attack or an act of aggression in relation of each other’s territory. In accordance with the Treaty, Russia will provide Yerevan with all the necessary assistance if the clashes are transferred directly to the territory of Armenia. We once again call on the parties to the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict for an immediate ceasefire, deescalation of tensions and a return to substantive negotiations in order to achieve a peaceful settlement based on basic principles in line with the agreements reached by the foreign ministers of the Russian Federation, the Republic of Azerbaijan and the Republic of Armenia in Moscow on Oct 10 this year.

As it is not difficult to guess, it is stated in plain text that the entry of Russia into the war can occur if the hostilities take place directly on the territory of Armenia. Drone strikes on OTRK and air defense missile systems are apparently not considered a sufficient reason and we are talking about ground combat operations. However, Armenia itself did not send inquiries to the CSTO on this matter either. The agreements on the refusal of shelling of settlements concluded in Geneva were violated on the same day. Azerbaijan fired from heavy weapons at Shusha and Stepanakert. Also, both sides accused each other of using phosphorus munitions to destroy the “green” near Shushi.
