Netanyahu made a secret trip to Saudi Arabia to meet crown prince, say reports
Middle East Eye, Nov 23 2020

Netanyahu secretly flew to Saudi Arabia to meet MbS and Pompeo, according to Israeli media. Sources told Haaretz that the overnight meeting took place in the city of Neom and that Mossad chief Yossi Cohen was also in attendance. Neom is a flagship mega project of the crown prince, being built on the Red Sea on Saudi Arabia’s northern border with Jordan and Egypt. Flight tracking websites noted that Netanyahu’s private jet, one used in past for visits to Putin, was on the ground for about two hours and returned to Israel at 12:30 am. Two Saudi government advisers confirmed the visit to the WSJ. Netanyahu’s office declined to comment to Haaretz on the visit, which would mark the first official trip by an Israeli leader to Saudi Arabia. A source told Walla that Netanyahu did not update Gantz and Ashkenazi on the visit. The meeting comes among Pompeo’s tour of Gulf states where he has been pushing for US allies to maintain a maximum pressure approach against Iran. Bahrain and the UAE have signed normalisation deals with Israel, in part to provide a united front against Iran, and many have speculated that Saudi Arabia will soon follow. However, in an interview with Reuters over the weekend, Saudi Arabia’s foreign minister Prince Faisal said that while the kingdom had “supported normalisation with Israel for a long time” there needed to first be “a permanent and full peace deal” between Israel and the Palestinians. Saudi Arabia is anticipating a less cordial relationship with incoming US President Joe Biden than it enjoyed with current President Donald Trump, who has been a driving force in establishing normalisation deals with Israel. In 2019, Biden referred to Saudi Arabia as a “pariah” state and warned he would make the kingdom “pay the price” for the 2018 killing of Jamal Khashoggi in Istanbul. However, the Saudi foreign minister said he was “confident that a Biden administration would continue to pursue policies that are in the interest of regional stability.”

Netanyahu Secretly Flew to Saudi Arabia, Met MBS and Pompeo, Israeli Sources Say
Noa Landau, Haaretz, Nov 23 2020

Netanyahu flew to Saudi Arabia and met MbS and Pompeo, Israeli sources said Monday. Mossad chief Yossi Cohen also attended the meeting, which took place in the city of Neom, according to the sources. The Prime Minister’s Office declined to comment on the matter. The flight was seen on flight-tracking websites. Senior Saudi adviser confirmed the Netanyahu-MBS meeting, but said no agreements had been reached, the WSJ reported on Monday. According to the report, the adviser said normalization and Iran were discussed at the secret meeting in Saudi Arabia on Sunday. According to political sources, Gantz and Ashkenazi were left in the dark about the meeting. Netanyahu’s aide Topaz Luk later tweeted that “Gantz is doing politics while the prime minister is making peace,” apparently in reference to Gantz’s announcement on Sunday that he has established a governmental commission of inquiry into Israel’s procurement of submarines and other naval vessels in the so-called “submarine affair.” The flight took off from Israel at 7:30 pm and landed in Neom, remaining on the ground for about two hours. The plane returned to Israel at around half past midnight, according to the flight-tracking websites. This is the same private plane that Netanyahu took several times for his visits to Putin, and that the prime minister intended to take for the White House ceremony for the signing of the normalization agreement with the UAE and Bahrain, before a public backlash forced him to fly with El Al. Over the weekend, Saudi Arabia’s Foreign Minister Prince Faisal touched upon the recent normalization deals in an interview to Reuters, stating:

The KSA has supported normalization with Israel for a long time, but one very important thing must happen first: a permanent and full peace deal between Israelis and Palestinians.

This comes amid Pompeo’s tour of Gulf Arab states, where he touted the Trump administration’s Mideast strategy that focused on Iran as “the central threat inside the region” and for a maximum pressure campaign that hampered Iran’s ability to support militias in Iraq, Lebanon and Syria. Pompeo and the Trump administration have long tried to coax Saudi Arabia into joining other Arab countries in normalizing relations with Israel.
