Biden backs Turkey’s F-16 fighter jet request: White House
Daily Sabah, Jul 6 2022

Washington on Tuesday reaffirmed its support of Turkey’s request to buy F-16 fighter jets and modernization of its fleet. “We’ve been very clear about the F-16. That conversation about the F-16 and Turkey has been around for some time,” White House spokesperson Karine Jean-Pierre said at a press conference. In a press conference on the sidelines of the NATO summit in Madrid, Biden said Washington “should sell” F-16 fighter jets to Turkey, adding he was confident that the needed congressional approval would be obtained. “We should sell the F-16 to Turkey. I said that in December, and my position hasn’t changed since then. It’s not in our interests not to sell them. We need congressional approval to get there, and I think we’ll get there,” he added. Biden’s remarks marked Washington’s strongest public backing yet for the request since it was lodged by Ankara last October. Turkey made a request to buy 40 Lockheed Martin-made F-16 fighters and nearly 80 modernization kits for its existing warplanes, in what is estimated to be a $6b deal.

NATO Liaison Office Head: alliance Summit decisions expression of NATO’s “strong political support” for Georgia
Agenda.ge, Jul 5 2022

Alexander Vinnikov, the Head of the NATO Liaison Office in Georgia, on Tuesday said that the decisions made at the Madrid Summit attended by the Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili were an expression of NATO’s “strong political support” for Georgia. Vinnikov noted alliance leaders had agreed to deepen relationships with some of NATO’s closest partners, among them Georgia, with the Strategic Concept endorsed at the event “intertwining” the security of aspirant countries like Georgia with the security of allies. The official also said the Strategic Concept also “reconfirmed” NATO’s commitment to its open-door policy and the decisions taken at its previous summits. Vinnikov noted: “The allies endorsed the tailored support measures for Georgia, being one of NATO’s partners most directly affected by external threats. These tailored support measures are the expression of NATO’s strong political support for Georgia, its sovereignty and territorial integrity and NATO’s commitment to the Bucharest Summit decisions on Georgia’s eventual membership. We will continue to work on the Substantial NATO-Georgia Package, which remains the main framework for our practical support for Georgia, including the issues of air defence, intelligence, crisis management and cyber defence.”

US and Finnish Soldiers Kick Off Summer Exercise – Iron Brigade, 4th Infantry Division kicks off exercises in Finland
US Army Europe, Jun 28 2022

Soldiers of the 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne Division, the 3rd Armored Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, and the Guard Jaeger Regiment of the Finnish army, conducted bilateral training in Santahamina Island, Finland, Jun 28 2022. Over 200 US soldiers conducted urban operations training alongside Finnish soldiers, learning tactical skills from each other in order to operate seamlessly with partner nations. The training is part of the Finnish Summer Exercise, a bilateral training exercise conducted in various bases throughout Finland, running from the end of June to September. The Guard Jaeger Regiment’s primary mission is to train soldiers for urban operations. These soldiers would defend the capital as part of wartime units formed by the regiment. Lt-Col Jacob Teplesky, commander of the 4th Squadron, 10th Cavalry Regiment, said: “Finland has been great. We appreciate the hospitality. From a military standpoint, the training has been exceptional. The Guard Jaeger Regiment has been very accommodating for anything we need. We have our engineers and sappers, conducting breach training, demolitions, and they have learned how to use new charges to enter and breach a door, Finnish type designs that we’ve never experienced before. It’s been some of the tactics, techniques, and procedures that our Soldiers have been training here in Santahamina. It’s very important, the cooperation between Finnish and US forces. I think you will continue to see, as we continue to expand these exercises, throughout the summer as we start training in Säkylä and Niinisalo, and we move from squad and platoon level, to a battalion command post exercise, we fly our unmanned aerial systems and we shoot a mechanized gunnery.” The 3rd Armored Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division is among other units assigned to the 1st Infantry Division, proudly working alongside regional security partners to provide combat-credible forces to V Corps, America’s forward deployed corps in Europe.
