kansas o’flaherty

A story from 2008 by Toni Schlesinger and Tom Bachtell about the global exploits of secret agent Kansas O’Flaherty and her bomb-sniffing dog Alerto. Each new week brings the latest on Kansas: her torrid affair with Shlomo the Mossad agent; Beni, the former Cirque du Soleil acrobat who performs illegal break-ins; Aunt Bea, who in her youth had an affair with British double agent Kim Philby; and the rest of the gang.

The Salon crowd disliked this intensely. One said

I wrote to them asking them just to cancel the balance of my Premium membership. The reason I offered was that I no longer wished to be associated with any webzine that continued to insult its readers so blatantly, week in, week out. I got a response saying, in part, “Also, if it makes a difference, the Kansas O’Flaherty cartoons will be discontinued in March.” IF??? Hell yeah, it makes a difference. I wrote back requesting the date of the last strip and was told, “The last Kansas O’Flaherty cartoon will run on March 4. After that we are dropping her.” So that’s what we have, and it comes from a staffer.

The “avalanche” of criticism generated by these cartoons is almost as interesting as the theme of the comic.
You would have to ask yourself why so many bothered to voice their strident disapproval of every aspect of the work.
“The lady doth protest too much, methinks.”

The authors are pro-Hillary: they say she “fits into everything these days and reflects all dreams, happy and sad.”

That first comment wasn’t actually me, …but I do have some sympathy for the sentiments my namesake voices.

Just because idle curiosity, :-), he/she may be interested to know that the storyline of the comic is written by Toni Schlesinger who …is a Chicago-native, New York City-based journalist and theater artist. She is best known for her long running “Shelter” column in The Village …, says Wikipedia.
